Head Coach: Mary Anne Crowe
Goals and Objectives:
- To teach our girls the basic skill set of a competitive tennis player (e.g. ground strokes, volleying, serving and lobbing) as well as the incorporation of topspin and slice into those shots.
- To improve footwork and conditioning, strategy, scoring, on court etiquette, and sportsmanship
- To provide knowledgeable and supportive instruction that will allow our girls to compete at a high level and provide an opportunity for our girls to grow athletically and socially.
Practice Days and Times:
Pre-Season begins mid-August with daily practices occurring both in the morning (9:30 – 11:30 am) and the afternoons (3:00 – 5:30 pm), with a mid-day break due to the summer heat and run Mondays thru Fridays.
During the pre-season the girls play each other in a Round Robin 4 game Pro Set in order to establish a working ladder.
From that point, challenge matches (USTA format – best of 3 sets with Ad scoring) are played to allow firm establishment of the latter that will ultimately determine the hierarchy of the competitive team (e.g. Varsity: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Singles, 1st and 2nd Doubles; Junior Varsity: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Doubles…). Mixed in with this ladder establishment a one on one critical analysis of a player’s strokes in order to provide knowledgeable suggestions for improvement of that players skill set.
Finally, the girls will engage in interspecific competition via two scrimmages versus area high school teams. Also, drills and skills (athletic and social) as well as singles and doubles strategy will be strengthened via drills and games, which thegirls really enjoy.
Once the regular season begins, weekday practices will occur on non-match days.
Finally, the girls will participate in a mandatory community service project that not only teaches the benefits of a generous spirit to those in our community in need, but may foster a future desire for community service, whether professionally or personally.
