In the next month, you will be doing research an author
specified by your teacher. This will be
part of your quarterly assessment. Your author is:
This research will lead to the following:
- A
PowerPoint and Oral presentation
- This
will be a brief five slide
presentation. The content is limited to these
specifics:
- A
title slide which includes a portrait of the author, birth and death
dates.
- One
slide devoted to the highlights of his life
- One
slide devoted to his/her works
- One
slide devoted to contribution to literature i.e. Why are you looking at this
author? Why is he/she considered
important?
- A
bibliography slide
- Speaker’s
notes that include information not
included on the slide, these are to be printed and used as the basis of
your oral presentation. The oral
presentation may not exceed 3-5 minutes
- ALL
information must be properly documented and the only allowable
sources are library subscription databases. Exceptions may be
made for illustrations with the permission of the instructor.
To begin this work, you will review the rudiments of
constructing a search strategy and learn how to gain access to the library
databases and the school server and the use of Noodle tools to construct a
bibliography. You will also learn how to do a simple search of the databases
and send the material to your email You will have several sessions in the Library
lab and the English lab and time to begin work on this in class. It is recommended that you keep all handouts
in a single place especially the
passwords for the databases. In
addition to this sheet you will be given several sheets of tips as well as a
rubric which will show you how this assignment will be graded.
Essential points about this assignment
- The
use of PowerPoint is secondary to the information presented. It is to be considered a tool and
not the object of the exercise
- Students
will be expected to collect information from several sources and blend
them together into a coherent whole.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Parenthetical references are
required in the speaker’s notes
- Students
will be expected to be able to email source material home. If you do not have a viable email
address, please see Mrs. Gates.
- Students
will be expected to store the finished PowerPoint in their own personal
account storage as well as a designated folder on the server
- Oral
presentations should be enhanced by the slide show not overwhelmed
- When saving your finished PowerPoint to
the server’s public file, students should name their presentation with
their class period first then the
author’s name and finally their
own name without any spaces or punctuation
