Safe Environment Training

Volunteering and Coaching at Archbishop Carroll

Thank you to our Archbishop Carroll volunteers for all you do each and every day to support our activities, athletics and field trips.  This page provides you with specific information concerning what is required by Archdiocese of Philadelphia as well as PA Law when working with children in schools.

Volunteers who reside in Pennsylvania do not have a provisional period.  You must obtain clearances prior to beginning service.

The Archdiocesan policy requires that ALL volunteers who may have any possible contact with children complete the following background checks and clearances:

Clearances for Volunteers Living in PA for Less than 10 years:

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • Pennsylvania State Police Clearance
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance

Clearances for Volunteers Living in PA Continuously for 10 years:

Volunteers who have regular contact with children (at least one time per week) are required to complete parts one and two of the Safe Environment training within 90 days of beginning their volunteer work.

    • All new coaches of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia – paid and volunteers – must complete Safe Environment Training. Within 90 days of hire, attendance is expected in the classroom component (Protecting God’s Children). The online component (Mandated Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse) is required for those hired after December, 2011.
  • Part II: The Mandatory Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse, is available online at our Training Institute in English and Spanish. This training provides an overview of Archdiocesan reporting procedures for suspected child abuse and Pennsylvania Child Welfare Laws. The training should take you approximately one hour to complete  Please note that if you began service before December, 2011, but did not attend the Mandated Reporter training, you are out of compliance and must complete the online training.

Clearances for Coaches, Faculty and Staff (non-voluntary positions)

Background Checks and Clearances for Staff, Coaches and Faculty (non-voluntary positions)

Personal safety for our students is our highest priority, especially when it comes to protecting them from sexual misconduct and violence.

Every member of the Archbishop John Carroll High School faculty and staff, including teachers, priests, deacons and even volunteers, must undergo a rigorous background investigation and complete a series of Safe Environment Training courses. These measures ensure everyone working with Carroll’s students can uphold the moral standards set by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office of Child and Youth Protection.

Archdiocesan policy requires all school employees, contract employees and coaches to possess clearances as required by Pennsylvania law. This includes any individual 14 years of age or older applying for or in a paid position as an employee responsible for the welfare of a student or having direct contact with students.
